Venezia Interrotta: A Time for Monsters is a unique, open, experimental way to explore urban (de)planning and aims to 'break the spell' of self-referential myths that Venice uses to promote its image internationally. Students will investigate five unbuilt architectural proposals, using ritual, role-play, method acting and choreographic drafting techniques: rearranging faux memories and facts as a premonition of a new Venice.

Open to curious minds, professionals and graduates /postgraduates in architecture, urban design, art, film, literature, philosophy, sociology, dramaturgy, and potentially other related disciplines.

Subject Learning Objectives
On successful completion of this workshop, students will have achieved the following:
- Understanding of the historical role of dissensus and omissions in developing an architectural body of knowledge full of undisclosed and unaccounted ghosts.
- Awareness of the cultural logics that frame popular imaginaries as legitimate source material for architectural and urban research.
- Demonstrated ability to successfully engage in narrative construction (or how to consolidate fact and fiction into effective architectural objectives and visual outcomes).
- To re-assess previous knowledge of architectural history/theory and its relevance for addressing emerging conditions.
Studio Structure
The studio is structured around a seminar and in-studio exercises, with daily presentations and discussions based on the tentative work of 5 to 6 research units. Content is delivered through presentations and structured exercises (i. background research; ii. hypothesis; iii. Implementation through mapping). Students enrolled in the workshop are expected to participate in class debates and discussions actively. Gradually, the workshop will move from theoretical speculation towards the visual concretisation of a critique.

Studio leader Grandeza-Bajeza
Based in Sydney since 2015, Grandeza-Bajeza (Amaia Sanchez-Velasco, Jorge Valiente Oriol, Gonzalo Valiente and Miguel Rodriguez-Casellas) is a collective of architects, educators and researchers founded in Madrid in 2011.
In 2019, the team was commissioned to conceptualise and design the Australian pavilion for the XXII Triennale di Milano. Their work, "Teatro Della Terra Alienata", received the Golden Bee Award for the best international contribution and was acquired in 2020 by the National Gallery of Victoria for the museum's permanent collection of Architecture and Design.
Their work has been exhibited and published in Germany (Bauhaus Dessau in 2014); USA (1st Chicago Architecture Biennial in 2015); Chile (XX Chilean Biennial of Architecture and Urbanism in 2017); Spain (XIV Spanish Biennial of Architecture and Urbanism in 2018); Italy (XXII Triennale di Milano in 2019); the Netherlands (Bureau Europa in 2019); and Australia (Mildura Arts Centre in 2016, Wagga Wagga Art Gallery in 2017, Bank Art Museum Moree in 2018, Tin Sheds Gallery in 2018, Australian Design Centre in 2018, and MADA Gallery in 2020).
